October is one of the most exciting times to book a Melbourne fishing charter. Adult snapper are returning to Port Phillip Bay, the main spring fishing window is opening and every trip carries the possibility of the unmistakable run of a good red.

For Able Fishing & Charters, this is not a story built around stock photography. The anglers throughout this article are real customers, the fish were caught during genuine charters and the smiles say more about the experience than any fishing slogan could.

The spring migration

Why October matters for Port Phillip Bay snapper.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority says most snapper fishing in Port Phillip Bay occurs between September and December, when large schools enter the Bay and feed before spawning. Its tracking research found that most tagged adult snapper arrived during October, with peak detections on the main fishing grounds occurring in November.

That makes early October an important planning point. The season is beginning to build, but the most sought-after dates do not stay empty forever. Anglers who wait until the run is at its busiest can find that their preferred weekends, group times or private-charter dates have already been taken.

Snapper remain a wild species, so timing a trip during the recognised season improves the opportunity rather than guaranteeing a particular catch. Wind, water temperature, tides, recent fish movement and safe operating conditions all influence the plan on the day.

You can read the official seasonal information on the Victorian Fisheries Authority Port Phillip guide and its Port Phillip Bay snapper tracking research.

Real customers, real fish

Recent catches from Able snapper charters.

There is nothing better than seeing the reaction when a customer lifts a quality snapper onto the deck. Some anglers have spent years chasing that moment. Others are holding a rod on Port Phillip Bay for the first time.

The catch above—and every image on our snapper page—comes from a real day on the water. Results naturally vary from trip to trip, but authentic photos help customers understand the size of fish that live in the Bay, the working space aboard the boat and the atmosphere when a group gets onto the fish.

A day aboard the Bacardi

What happens on a Melbourne snapper charter?

Able's larger charter boat, the Bacardi, departs from Gem Pier in Williamstown. It provides a roomy, stable platform for shared and private fishing groups, with a covered cabin and private toilet facilities onboard.

The skipper plans around the available weather information, conditions and recent fishing activity. Once the boat reaches suitable ground, the crew helps prepare the supplied equipment and explains the method being used. Snapper fishing often rewards patience: there may be time between bites, followed by a sudden run that brings everyone on deck to attention.

  • Quality rods and reels are supplied
  • Bait and fishing tackle are included
  • An experienced skipper and crew run the session
  • Private toilet facilities are available aboard the Bacardi
  • Catering may be available by prior arrangement

Beginners are welcome. Let us know the group's experience level when you enquire so the crew understands who may need extra guidance with the equipment and fishing method.

Choose your trip

Shared seats or a private snapper charter?

Shared five-hour charter
  • $180 per adult
  • $120 per child aged 7–13
  • Departs Gem Pier, Williamstown
  • Minimum of six passengers required
  • A good choice for individuals, couples and smaller groups
Private Bacardi charter
  • Four hours from $2,200
  • Five hours from $2,300
  • Base price includes up to 15 passengers
  • Add up to five fishing passengers at $120 each
  • The entire boat is reserved for your group

A shared booking is often the simplest option for one or two people who want to join a scheduled trip. A private charter suits families, work groups, social clubs and groups of mates who want the Bacardi to themselves.

For a smaller, faster fishing-only option, Able also operates Bacardi 151 from Wyndham Harbour. Compare the Werribee South fishing charter, or see every current rate on the Able charter price list.

Prepare for the Bay

What should you bring?

Even a bright Melbourne morning can feel cooler and windier once the boat is underway. Dress in layers and choose enclosed, non-slip footwear. A waterproof outer layer is useful because spray and changing conditions are part of being on the water.

  • Warm layers and a waterproof jacket
  • Sun protection, sunscreen and a secure hat
  • Water and food appropriate to your booking arrangements
  • Any personal medication required during the trip
  • A valid Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence unless an exemption applies

If seasickness is a concern, discuss suitable options with a pharmacist or healthcare professional before the charter day. Always follow the skipper's instructions and review Able's booking conditions with your group before departure.

Look after the fishery

Know the current snapper rules.

Victorian fishing rules apply to everyone onboard. At the time of publication, the Victorian Fisheries Authority lists a minimum legal snapper size of 28 centimetres and a daily bag limit of ten snapper per person, with no more than three equal to or over 40 centimetres. Fish cannot be filleted in or on Victorian waters.

Rules can change, so anglers should always check the current VFA snapper limits before fishing rather than relying only on an older article or social media post.

Responsible fishing means measuring fish correctly, respecting bag limits and following the crew's directions about catch handling. Those habits help keep Port Phillip Bay's snapper fishery strong for future seasons.
